Most major credit cards from major banks are supported. Make sure the credit card you want to add to Apple Pay is supported.This ensures that you really want Apple Pay on your watch. Even if you have Apple Pay set up on your paired iPhone already, you still need to set up your Apple Watch. To use Apple Pay on your watch, you’ll need to enter a credit or debit card (if you want to use multiple credit cards, you’ll have to set them up individually). If the retailer doesn’t have your credit card number, a nefarious hacker can’t gain access to it. This is significant if you think about all the times retailers have been in the news in regard to hackers gaining access to customer data. Plus, the store that you’re buying things from has no record of your credit card they just know that combination of the Device Account Number and the generated security code. Why is this more secure than just swiping your credit card or debit card? When you use Apple Pay no one can glance at your card and perhaps write down the numbers to use them later. The payment system and Apple Pay talk to each other, exchange those codes, and verify them, and then your charge goes through.

In order for a charge to go through with Apple Pay, the card’s Device Account Number is needed plus a onetime security code that’s generated dynamically at the time of transaction. The Secure Element is the only place that this Device Account Number exists, and even if someone were able to get this number they couldn’t charge anything to it. This number is not your credit card number, and it’s stored locally on a special encrypted chip on the Apple Watch called the Secure Element. Instead, during the activation process a unique Device Account Number is created and associated with your credit card/debit card. Apple Pay is probably a more secure way of paying for things than just using your credit card, for a few reasons.įirst off, when you add a card to Apple Pay (see the instructions accompanying this sidebar) your credit card number isn’t stored on the watch or on Apple’s servers. Paying for things wirelessly certainly seems like something out of a science fiction movie, but people get nervous whenever you have to enter your credit card into something new. This puts the item in a meta-list: Starred items (this will come up again in the Apple Watch app section). Each item on the list can be starred by tapping the star icon next to it. You’re taken to the list where you can add things by typing them in and tapping either the Add button (at the top of the screen) or the Next button (on the keyboard) ( Figure 4.81). You will be notified via email when the person you invited joins the list. If they don’t have an account, they’ll be emailed with instructions to create an account with which they can access the list. If they have a Wunderlist account already, they will get an alert in the Wunderlist app in addition to an email. As soon as the list is created, an invitation will be sent to that person.
